The Miner Shack

This project is Mike’s personal house. It was completed in 2017 before B-Mike Contracting was established and he was competely new to the area. With his wife and kids still living in Fort Collins while under construction, time and resources were very limited. Eager to have his family move, Mike worked non stop till it was complete.

This Home was originally located in Hill City, SD, and moved to Fairburn in 1994. The main section of the structure was built in the late 1800s during the black hills gold rush. Showing its age and many improper remodels over the years, this house needed the makeover its history required.

We started with demolition. Removed the drop ceiling in the kitchen, stripped the carpets, removed all the finish trim, removed the closets in the bedrooms, and moved all doors to storage for reuse. Quickly we were framing, moving doors, installing structural beams on raw timber log posts, and creating real closets for the bedrooms. We also had the house rewired electrically before we got back into the finish carpentry. Replaced every outlet, switch, and light fixture while also correcting loads of dangerous wiring. It was only after all the repairs complete we were able to begin the finish carpentry. Pine tongue and groove ceiling in the newly vaulted kitchen, all new interior trim, drywall install/finish on new walls and patches.

On to Paint. This place got the royal treatment paint job by Mike. All new wood was sanded and stained in place, kitchen cabinets painted, and 3 different colors on the sheetrock. With each step done in the order listed, the previously finished item was masked and tape caulked creating perfect paint lines in the entire home. The final results are gorgeous.

For the low budget remodel this project was it came out feeling like a million bucks and was completed in less than 6 weeks time. Our favorite part of this project was the entryway support beam with the seemless rough sawn cedar wrap and load bearing log timbers. It came out flawless and really make the house feel like your about to strike gold.
