Custer Cottage

This antique home was purchased by a couple of love birds with the passion to remodel it themselves. They completed the interior framing, insulation, and drywall before the construction loan deadline started looming near and the fire in the relationship was smothered in stress. With the single mother now trying to complete her house alone, we came to finish the job. We replaced the old rotten lap siding, rebuilt the front porch deck, and completed the interior finish in the living room, kitchen, and hallway.

With the original structure of the house from the 1900s, we went with traditional 5-inch lap siding for a period-correct look. We finished the porch using some salvaged Barnwood, wrapping the top beam, and using aged 6×6 timbers for the posts. With the boardwalk style deck and tin ceiling this porch is absoutely beautiful.

The interior finish started in the hallway. Finished out installing the floating laminate floor, hung the remaining drywall, finished the taping and a classic skip trowel texture, installed the bedroom doors, and all finish trim including hanging the light fixture.

The master bedroom was next. Having already been mostly finished, we just correctly set the french door, finished the sheetrock around the door frame, then trimmed the door and all windows. This room was previously finished with knockdown spray texture which we matched making the new and existing texture blend seamlessly.

The living room had much more to be done. We put a skip towel texture on the exposed walls and entryway to the kitchen, shiplap on the other walls, pine tongue and groove on the ceiling, all finish carpentry for the doors and windows, hung the ceiling fan, and did a makeover of the fireplace mantle. The rustic feel in this space is timeless.

Last was the Kitchen. Built a custom timber style vent column for the range hood, custom routed the cabinet door profiles, installed the butcher block countertops/shelving, installed the lead pipe shelving supports, installed pantry door, all finish trim, and mounted the under-counter farm sink. This house will continue to be a cozy cottage with rustic charm for many more years to come.

Completing this project while the family lived in the house was a challenge. Coupled with looming bank deadlines for loan closings, restricted budgets, and a customer with more desires than the bank would let her have. We still got the project complete and this house will continue to be a cozy cottage with rustic charm for many more years to come.
